I don't think that the plan is to modify the backend code at all; there's
just some confusion as to what the backend is doing. Once that's settled,
progress can advance elsewhere. Here is what I get from find-scanner:

find-scanner: found scanner " Scanner 300A4 4.11" at device /dev/scanner

if that is of any importance to you. It is a MicroTek ScanMaker V310.
