That's a known problem. I think someone (Dairiki?) started re-writing
the preview code, but I'm not sure what the current status is.
xscanimage would greatly benefit from having someone who's really into
GUI programming. I took over maintenance of it when the original
authors became distracted with other work, but I'm not a GUI person
and would be happy if someone else took it under his/her wings.
