    Hi.

    The suggested way is an option "mode" (SANE_NAME_SCAN_MODE in saneopts.h).
    E.g. the umax backend uses scanmodes "Color", "Gray" and "Lineart".
    There are other backends that do it the same or a similar way.
    But pay attention that this is not defined as a well known option
    in the current sane standard.
