A warm reboot and it's still working.

I have not since attempted a cold start.
I have not cycled the power on the scanner (this has sometimes caused hard
lockup).
I have not attempted to start/use the USB printer attached.

Still working on it. If I find something that definitely causes the problem
I will post. In the meantime, thanks for the support/help/condolences, etc.
