xscanimage hangs when scanner is power cycled

hello,

i have a microtek x6el on the included adapted 290x card.
if i have the scanner on at power up, xscanimage works fine.
if i turn the scanner off and sometime later turn it back
on and attempt to grab a preview image with xscanimage,
the scanner will make noises like it is going to start a
scan, then things will stop and xscanimage will hang.
at this point the only way to get things to work again
is to power cycle everything.

ideally i would like to power up the scanner only when
i intend to play with it, as i have heard the light bulb
doesn't last too long and is quite expensive. so i have
tried to boot without the scanner on and [add|remove]-single-device.
the kernel [2.2.14pre9] and find-scanner seem to recognize
the device, but i cant get xscanimage to find it even with
the -d option.

any wisdom would be appreciated. i am running sane-1.0.1
with the microtek2.08 backend. i have an epox motherboard
with onboard adaptec scsi in addtion to the pci scsi
card that came with the scanner.
