Unless another contributor added something I missed, the snapscan
backend makes all its scsi calls using the utility functions provided
by SANE. Nothing weird was done using the sg interface directly.
Of course, it's possible that one of the sane_scsi calls has a bad
parameter that is causing the problem.

I haven't installed a 2.2 series kernel yet, so I haven't had a chance
to try it out. I just got one though, and I use the aha152x driver,
so I can see first-hand.
