find-scanner finds nothing. NOT permissions

I posted this question a week ago, and Milon Firikis was
kind enough to reply, but the problem persists.

I just installed sane v1.00 on my machine (running BSD/OS)
It compiled, built, and installed without error.

I have a UMAX Astra 1200S at /dev/sg0.

* It's permissions are 666. (Anyone can read or write them)

* The OS and the BIOS both see the scanner as a generic scsi
device at /dev/sg0

* I have a hard (not symbolic) link from /dev/sg0 to /dev/scanner

* OS diagnostics show the Astra at that device.

* When I boot windows on the same box, I can scan.

/usr/local/etc/sane.d/saned.conf contains just the line:
localhost

/usr/local/etc/sane.d/umax.conf contains just the line:
/dev/scanner

/usr/local/etc/sane.d/dll.conf contains just the lines:
net
umax

The inetd.conf and /etc/services entries are correct.
("telnet localhost sane" gets a connect, and saned runs)

But "scanimage --list-devices" and "find-scanner" list
no devices.

I'm probably configuring something wrong, but I don't know how
to diagnose the problem. Is there a command I can enter from
the telnet session to list the devices? What else could I
be doing incorrectly?
