Stop ... Linux doesn't map ID-to-minor.

Then sga is probably correct. Linux checks for the device-type, ans maps
e.g. harddisks on sda,sdb,..., cdrom on sr0,... etc. It look you scanner is
the only device on the bus, or none has ID<5.

No. Linux is maybe a bit strange in this respect - maybe they wanted to save
some minors ...

Moreover be careful about setting proper permissions. Use strace to check the
exact cause of the abort, if there are still problems ...
