Yes, this question comes up periodically. The short answer: TWAIN
essentially depends on a graphical user interface, which makes it
difficult/impossible to run below the SANE api (which separates the
user-interface from the device controls). If interested in the TWAIN
details, see http://www.twain.org/.

What would be possible is to implement a TWAIN-SANE bridge, but I
don't think that's very interesting.

Maybe it's time to start a FAQ for SANE. Any takers?
