A simple and useful solution to this would be to be able to specify a pipe
as the filename, just as xv does.

Specifying "|xv -" would do quite what you want. Other might want to use
"|ppmtogif >bla.gif" ...

Well - the idea above should be quite easy ... a few lines of code around
open() and close() in the saving code ;-)

I'd do it myself, but am busy with GGI.
