    I was the person origionally asking about the speed of the HP backend.

    I replaced the HP SCSI card with a cheap used Adaptec AHA1540B and now
    scanning starts instantly and goes much faster. I guess the HP card
    was a real peice of junk.

    As a side bonus I don't have to boot DOS anymore and I can replace the
    soundcard CDROM with an extra SCSI cdrom I have lying around (Being a
    fileserver, the machine does not need a sound card.)
