    1) I don't use scsi definition

    2) if lsmod tells you module scanner loaded ?

    3) be in text shell ( ALT-CTRL-F1 )
         user : root
with PC and SCANNER on, if you connect the usb cable
         it tells you :
usb.c USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x4b8/0x10c) is not claimed by any
    active driver.
         usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
         usb.c: error getting string descriptor 0 ( error=-110)

This means that sane-backends is not installed !!!

Using Mandrake 8.0 I did not install everything and so I found sane
    not installed
and to do that later was composed with several files

       after installation of : sane-backends-1.0.4, libsane1.0.4,
    sane-1.04,sane-frontends-1.0.4

       in /etc/sane.d/epson.conf enable : usb /dev/usb/scanner0

        rmmod scanner

        modprobe scanner vendor=0x4b8 product=0x10c

        at this point :

scanimage -L should tell : device 'epson:/dev/usb/scanner0' is a Epson
    Perfection6640 flated scanner

        scanimage -d epson -mode gray > t.pnm

remember that some work more needs to be done for color acquisition

    Best regards
