    Dear Oliver,

    Thanks for the time. Things got a lot better, it didn't core dump.
    The debug=12 messages describe the scanner and then there is this

    ===
    [umax] ERROR: sane_start: sanei_scsi_open_extended returned too

    [umax] sane_close
    [umax] sane_exit
    ===

    Looks like a simple fix (I hope).
