    Hi Peter,
Thanks for the tip of hpscan, I can now shut down my lamp.

In my ignorance I assumed that it had crashed, but it didn't exactly crash it just took a long time (1 min +) and in the process xsane and xscanimage stops responding to the user, but does come back eventually.

    In my tests,
On XPA (not 'ATM' I can't type) the lamp's swap to the adapter and the head moves 4 inches then stops as I guess it should, then it waits 20-40 secs and scans the entire 5 by 5 area (by the sound I guess 300 dpi) it's output is noise, but not my image. I tried changing the dpi and the scan area but it insists on 5 by 5 and about the same 300 dpi and image noise.

I get the same result from both xsane and xscanimage. Neither crash, I just don't get an image.
Sorry for crying 'wolf' and possibly causing some searching for a phantom crash.
Do you have any other suggestions please to get my image.

    Thank you.

    Doug

    Hi,

to switch the lamp off you can use the tool hpscan from
    http://www.kirchgessner.net/sane.html .

    hpscan /dev/sga -ltest 0

    should switch it off.
Can you try xscanimage with the scan source XPA ? Does it crash too ?

It doesn't appear to turn itself of after any period of time that I've noticed. I don't like having to boot windoze to turn the lamp of. Can anyone enlighten me for this situation.
