    I've been told that the reason you're seeing this, is that HP scanners use
    two interpolated sources of scan data, to double the resolution (this could
    be wrong, but it makes sense...).
    If this is the case, then you need to read both data streams, and
    interpolate the pixels - otherwise, you'll get a picture which looks almost
    correct - but not quite...
