Well, it isn't that special once you know it :-).
Press firmly when you first insert the slide and *before* you run
scanimage. The scanner will turn on, suck on the slide a millimeter
or two, and then turn off. Then you can run scanimage.
My guess is that by doing it in the opposite order, scanimage
records blackness until the slide has finished loading.
