Hi, Laura.

It sounds like a problem with the permissions of /dev/scanner.
Try (as root):

chmod 777 /dev/scanner /dev/sg*

Then try scanimage again (not as root).

If it still fails, send me the output of:

ls -l /dev/scanner /dev/sg*

and

id
