Hi Peter,
I applied the patch and tried xscanimage and, taa daah!, it worked.
I only had time to scan in one colour image to test it, but that
went without a hitch. Many thanks for the quick help.

Looking at the oldish dates on the official sane packages, I was
a little worried at first that development work had died on it
and that new scanners wouldn't be supported. Judging by the
amount of activity on the sane-devel mailing list, my fears
have been allayed. Thanks to all the SANE developers for the
continued good work!
