Hm,
xsane-0.35 should be ok - which libtiff and jpeglib versions do you use?

I use libjpeg.so.6.0.1
in /usr/include/jpeglib.h:
/#define JPEG_LIB_VERSION 61 /* Version 6a */

and libtiff.so.3
in /usr/include/tiff.h
#define TIFF_VERSION 42

that works fine!
