I don't think this is terribly relevant to SANE these days though. In
theory SANE provides an API which could be used for digital stills,
but the way these cameras work isn't well suited to SANE's current
design. Since the gPhoto project has many cameras documented and
supported, with an interface which is better suited to cameras than
SANE's -- I say wish them the best of luck and add a pointer from the
SANE homepage for camera users to http://www.gphoto.org/

There might (now? eventually?) be cameras being used in a setting which
makes SANE the right API for them, and we should try to cater for these.
In particular I'm thinking of cameras permanently attached to a PC
for high-resolution stills. These would likely work a lot more like a
scanner, especially if they're comparatively slow.
