I agree.

I would also like to point out that there needs to be more data formats
that include compressed streams, etc. and there needs to be a way for
drivers and applications to negotiate supported formats.

I have many scanners that produce (in firmware) JFIF images and I really
really need to pass them as JFIF to applications that support it. We
are talking about production scanning here, tens to hundreds of images
per minute.

TWAIN and ISIS support this sort of data flow. It matters.
