scanner won't budge during scanning, producing weird patterns as output

Hi,
I have a canon 2700f, and it ran once with sane. Until something happened.
I'm not too sure what I changed, but the scanner stopped scanning. A
couple of days ago I decided to reinstall the scanner and sane (1.0.1) from
scratch. The result was the same symptoms as before:
- the scsi host adapter to which the scanner is connected is correctly
found during bootup
- the scanner appears in /proc/scsi/scsi with the correct host, channel and
ID
- sane finds the scanner both with find-scanner and scanimage -L
- the scanner correctly initializes when it's host adapter is initialized
(I can hear and see the motor pulling the film sled around a bit)
- I can select the scanner with xscanimage
- when I scan something or want to grab a preview, the scanner doesn't do
a thing (the motor doesn't do anything, no light), and xscanimage
starts receiving weird random patterns as "scan" or preview
The scanner works ok under windows, so the scanner itself is all right.
I followed the installation instructions found at
http://www.rzg.mpg.de/~mpd/sane/
while installing the scanner and sane (I tried with and w/o the separate
backend). For those interested, a sample pattern can be found at
http://www.heim1.tu-clausthal.de/~sriedel/out.pnm.gz
I'm a bit frustrated at the moment... Can anyone think of a cause for this
phenomenon?

Regs,
Sven
