GT-7000 transparencies reader

Hi,
I have found a problem using my flatbed scanner, an Epson GT-7000, when I try to use
the kit to read transparencies.
The kit itself is made of a cover replacement that back-lights the slides; it reduces
the scanning area to approximatively 10 x 12 cm (4" x 5"). When you turn it on, the
scanner recognizes its presence and automatically moves the scanning head to the
beginning of the new scanning area.
I've run various tests of the scanner using xscanimage (both from Gimp and from
command line) and everything works fine, both the basic functions (scanning modes) and
the advanced features (the geometry parameters and the brightness) if I don't use the
transparencies reader.
When I try to do a scan using the transparencies reader, both from scanimage and from
xscanimage, I get an error message saying "invalid argument".
I've tried to use the debug options in scanimage (exporting SANE_DEBUG_SCSI=128 and
SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=128) and, after a list of initialization messages, I receive the
following message:
sane_start: set_area failed: invalid argument
Given what I've written above about how the scanner and the reader work (the head
moves to a new default position if you use the reader), my idea is that sane is trying
to position the head to some coordinates that the scanner doesn't recognize as valid,
but this is only a guess and I may be wrong.
Is there something I can try to solve this problem? This same problem was also
encountered by another subscriber to this mailing list who wrote me a week ago
describing it in the same way for the same scanner (by the way, I wanted to write him
before sending this message, but a disk crash prevented me to access my e-mail
addressbook, so I hope he's reading this message, I'll write him asap).
Thak you for your work
Ruggero Valetti
