Subject: Announcement: Linux sg driver for testing
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

For those of you that have some problem with Linux's existing
sg driver, you may like to try one found at:
http://www.netwinder.org/~dougg

The driver is for Linux kernel version 2.2.1 (and will work for
all versions back to 2.1.118). It has the following features:
- backward compatible with the existing interface (some dislike this)
- adds scatter-gather (good-bye SG_BIG_BUF limit)
- adds per file sequencing (was per device)
- adds command queuing (can go write(), write(), read(), read() )
- adds asynchronous notification
- uses RAM above 16MB level if non-ISA adapter (eg PCI)

The web page above also contains several test programs. I would
certainly appreciate further testing. I have a UMAX Astra 1220S
which works fine with the enhanced sg driver (with or without
recompilation).

If this driver is sufficiently "backward compatible" and adds
features that apps writers think are useful then it will be
presented to the powers that be for consideration for replacing
the existing driver in 2.2.1 (which is the same driver (almost)
as used in 2.0.x).
