Clueless about Umax 1220S gamma

My Umax 1220S tends to scan darker that the actual image being scanned. I
can usually correct for this by setting the gamma >1 in color mode. In
grey-scale or line-art mode, the scan also comes out darker. So I try to
change the intensity gamma under grey-scale, but the picture turns out
either black or is washed out (nearly all grey). Can someone help me set
the correct intensity gamma for b/w? I wish xscanimage or scanimage has a
brightness control for this scanner.

Sorry if I sound clue-less; I'm new to scanning.
Relavent info: Redhat Linux 5.1, kernal 2.0.34
Umax 1220S scanner
SANE v1.00 with sane-umax1.00a patch
compiled with gtk v0.99.13

Thanks
