Hi Steve,
7 feet could be too much, for an ultra-scsi-chain with three or more devices
only 150 cm (about 5feet) is allowed. So that could be one problem!

Try to compile the scsi-driver (kernel/module) with command-queeing disabledand
with reconnect/disconnect disabled!
