Problem with backend/Makefile on SGI IRIX 6.2.

I am having a problem compiling sane-0.74 on an SGI machine running IRIX version
6.2. The problem is with the Makefile in the backend directory. I tried all
the different makes that come with IRIX and they all give errors (although
different ones). I assume you nee GNU make in order to compile this software.
Are there any plans to convert the Makefile to work with a less capable make?
