can the HP Photosmart scanner scsi card work, or do I need to use a supported scsi card

I've got an hp photosmart scanner that I'd like to use with sane (I realize
there are some limitations in its use). When I install linux (redhat 5.1)
it fails to recognize the scsi card that ships with the photosmart scanner.
I'm assuming, then, that Sane won't work with it.
Are those that have gotten the photosmart scanner to work plugging it into
some other scsi card that they've installed, or can someone give me pointers
on making sane and linux recognize the card that ships with the photosmart.
