I tried Xocr, but it always crashed on me. Oh well. I then learned
about SOCR, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet. It's
homepage is http://www.socr.org. I haven't tried it lately, but the
latest NEWS was from July 14th 1998. There is a nice screenshot of a
KDE OCR program too. (It doesn't appear to recognize anything yet,
though.) It looks quite impressive, and my previous conversations
with the author were quite encouraging.
