I don't have a transparency adapter, so I don't know anything about it.
But if I have some time we may try to correct it!
I also think I got a crash when I tried 10 bits with

There is an error in sane-0.72 and before that will be fixed in sane-0.73.
Be careful scanning with transparency-adapter with sane-0.72
