xscanimage & preview bug?

I've been using sane for about 9 months. Some time ago, I noticed that if the
"preserve preview" option was on, xscanimage (run from the shell or Gimp) would
crash while trying to display the preview window. I simply turned it off, and
all went on (some earlier version did work, though).

Now, with 0.71 + gtk0.99.7 patches, whenever I ask xscanimage to display the
preview window it crashes. I did manage to get it to work properly once, but
I'm not sure how (I deleted the entire .sane directory, but that's not enough)
- maybe I was just lucky.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get this working again?
