Ah, that's a different issue indeed. A look at the SCL docs shows
that there is a "Light Source Test" command. This command controls
the scanner internal light if no ADF is installed and the ADF light
source if an ADF is installed. This may not be what you want, but
it's the closest I found. The command is:

ESC * f # L

where # is either (ASCII) 0 to turn the lamp off or (ASCII) 1 to turn
the lamp on.

Actually, there is a bunch of ADF & transparency related commands, but
my guess is that they would fail without an installed ADF.

Maybe you want to order the SCL docs for yourself? If so, send mail
to hp_scan@greeley.sykes.com (this is an address that gets forwarded
to a human being, not a mailing list handler). They make you fill out
a "developer registration form" but are usually very prompt in sending
the docs.
