There were some reports of successful uses of the Paragon 600 II CD
and it really seems to be compatible with the SP version. I don't
know about the Adaptec 1542 but the AHA-1505 and AHA-2940 are reported
to work fine, so I'd hope the same is true for the 1542 (can anybody
confirm this?).

Which version of SANE are you using? The latest one (0.57) no longer
issues any request sense commands.

Could you try the latest version and let me know if/when it works?
